Editorial Standards

Purpose of the Catalogue

The EHAER Public Domain Literature Library aims to make a selection of mid-20th-century science fiction stories more accessible by providing curated descriptions, category guides, and reading recommendations. It is a finding aid, not a scholarly edition or a publisher. The catalogue is designed for general readers interested in historical speculative fiction.

Scope and Selection

The collection comprises 92 works, primarily short stories and novellas published between 1950 and 1962, drawn from Project Gutenberg. Selections were based on availability in the public domain and a wish to represent a variety of authors, themes, and settings from the period. No single theme dominates; the catalogue includes space adventures, inventor tales, social satire, and speculative futures.

Source Attribution

All texts originate from Project Gutenberg, a digital library of public-domain works. Each book record includes the original publisher (typically Project Gutenberg) and, where available, illustrator credits. The EHAER catalogue does not hold or claim any additional rights to the texts; it serves as a linking service and editorial guide.

Bibliographic Records

Each book entry includes the title, author (with birth and death years when known), subject keywords, a catalogue note, and a target reader note. The catalogue note is a summary prepared as supplementary catalogue material based on the public-domain text description and excerpts; it is not a full review. Author names and dates are taken from Library of Congress or Project Gutenberg metadata.

Category Assignment

Works are grouped into four categories: Space Future; Machines Invention; Other Worlds; and Social Speculation. These categories are organizational tools, not definitive literary judgments. Some works could fit multiple categories; the choice is editorial. The categories are described in separate guides.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
